What Back & Core Foundations is

Back & Core Foundations at Asana Physiotherapy in Maple Ridge is a guided small-group class led by a kinesiologist. The focus is spinal support through deep core stability, posture awareness, hip and mid-back mobility, and practical movement skills for sitting, standing, lifting, and everyday activity.

This is not a high-intensity workout and not a one-on-one physiotherapy assessment. It is a foundations class for people who want steadier trunk control and more comfortable back movement in a coaching environment.

You may still see the older name Back Relief & Core Stability in some places online. The class offer is the same foundations approach under the updated name Back & Core Foundations.

What you work on in class

Sessions combine corrective exercise with clear coaching. You learn how to engage deep stabilizing muscles that support the spine, not only surface core work. Trunk stability drills help you keep control while arms and legs move. Gentle mobility work targets common tight areas such as the hips and mid-back.

You also leave with practical cues for how to sit, stand, and lift with less unnecessary strain. Movements are modifiable. Tell your instructor if something feels sharp, unsafe, or beyond your comfort so the session can be adjusted.

    Who this class is for

Back & Core Foundations suits desk workers and others with sedentary jobs who feel recurring stiffness through the middle or lower back. It also fits people recovering from non-acute back discomfort who are cleared for exercise, and anyone who wants a safer, low-impact way to build core strength and posture support.

If you have acute back pain, red-flag symptoms, recent surgery, or significant flare-ups, ask us first. Physiotherapy assessment may be the better starting point before a group class.

How this differs from physiotherapy and other classes

Physiotherapy assesses and treats injury with a clinical plan and hands-on care when needed. Back & Core Foundations is a class format focused on stability, mobility, and movement education under kinesiology coaching.

Private training is one-on-one progressive exercise. Stretch & Reset is a restorative mobility class with guided stretching and release tools. Semi-private training is a two-person format.

Many people use Back & Core Foundations alongside physiotherapy or kinesiology once they are ready for guided group loading and control work. Ask if you are unsure which to book first.

    What to expect in class

Arrive ready to move. Classes are coached with attention to form, breathing, and how to progress or modify each drill. The environment is small-group so your instructor can give clearer feedback than a large fitness class typically allows.

Expect a mix of floor and standing work depending on the session focus. No prior gym experience is required. Level is beginner to intermediate and fully modifiable.

Classes are held at Asana Physiotherapy, 112-22633 Selkirk Avenue, Maple Ridge. Spot availability and schedule are listed in online booking.
